Winter Vacation in Big Sky, Montana

Winter Vacation in Big Sky

During winter, Big Sky transforms into a snowy wonderland. Big Sky is located in Southeastern Montana. Most people prioritize visiting Big Sky Resort for awesome snowboarding and skiing opportunities. Also, there are many things to do during winter vacation in Big Sky without Snowboarding and skiing.

Last winter, I visited Big Sky, Montana, and the experience was amazing. That was unforgettable for me. Besides skiing and snowboarding, I also enjoyed ice skating, Wildlife tours, hot springs, Dog Sledding, and Wildlife tours. Here are some of the spots of Big Sky I enjoyed the most and what I did.

Getting in Big Sky

Mostly you can reach there by Air or can. Both are enjoyable. But I prefer to get there by car.

By Air

The nearest airport to Big Sky is Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport. This is an hour’s distance from Big Sky. You can rent a car and get to Big Sky.

By Car

As I love to drive a car, I always prepare to get anywhere with a vehicle. I didn’t want to miss the stunning view of nature. So I decided to get there by car.

Skiing and Snowboarding in Big Sky

This place is famous for winter activities. Snowboarding and skiing are the most loved things to winter lovers in Big Sky. Two locations are popular for doing these things in there. One is Moonlight Basin and the other one is Big Sky Sky Resort.

Moonlight Basin

The Moonlight Basin features over 1,900 acres of skiable terrain. There are more than 300 runs for challenging expert trails. I was there in December and the time to do winter activity in Moonlight from November to mid-April.

There you can rent skiing and snowboarding equipment from the rental shop. But I always prefer to buy equipment before you go there. Before I went there I bought Skis, Ski Boots, Poles, Helmet, Jacket, Pants, Snowboard, and a small first air box.

Big Sky Resort

Your journey will be uncompleted without visiting Big Sky Resort. This place has over 5,800 acres of amiable terrain. The Big Sky Resort is one of the largest ski resorts in the U.S. There are many runs for challenging experts and beginners.

Snowshoeing in Big Sky

Lone Mountain Ranch is the best place in the Big Sky for snowshoeing. This place has 85 km of snowshoeing trails. There you can find some rental shops where you can rent snowshoeing equipment or you can buy Snowshoes, Poles, Helmets & Glass for a long time use as I say. So if you are spending your winter vacation in Big Sky, don’t miss snowshoeing in Lone Mountain Ranch.

Dog Sledding

How about if you’re standing on something and some dog pulls away? Don’t miss out on dog sledding in the Big Sky area if you don’t want to miss out on this exciting experience. I enjoyed a half-day dog sledding in Yellowstone, which cost around $400. But if you want a full-day tour, the cost will be around $800.

Snowmobiling in Big Sky

There you will find some local companies that offer snowmobile tours. With a snowmobiling tour, I enjoyed scenic trails in the Yellowstone National Park and Gallatin National Forest.

I rented a snowmobile and it cost $80 for two hours. But if you rent for half a day, it will cost $150 to $250 and a full-day snowmobile rent cost will be $150 to $400.

Additional costs like fuel charges, gear rental, and insurance will cost around $50 to $80. I advise you to book in advance, especially from December to February.

Ice Skating in Town Center

The best place for ice skating in the Big Sky is the Big Sky Town Center. In Big Sky, I was looking for the best ice rink. So I asked local people for the best ice rink and they told me about the Big Sky Town Center ice rink. I went there and skated under the stars.

Exploring Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park is an hour’s distance from Big Sky. Generally, people have an additional plane for visiting Yellowstone National Park. But as this place is nearest to Big Sky, so didn’t miss the opportunity to explore the incredible Yellowstone National Park. There I explored the geysers amidst the snow and snowmobile tour.

Accommodations in Big Sky

There you will find three types of accommodations. If you have enough budget then go for luxury. If you don’t for mid-ranged or low-budgeted accommodations.

Luxury

If you want a luxury feel, including spas, ski-in/ski-out, and fine dining then the Lodge at Big Sky, Montage Big Sky, and Summit Hotel is for you.

Mid-Range

If your budget is mid-range then I will recommend you for Buck’s T-4 Lodge and Big Sky Resort Village Center. They provide comfortable rooms. Also there you get access to the slopes and other activities.

Budget Friendly

The Whitewater Inn is the best option for budget-friendly accommodation with affordable lodging options and essential amenities.

I selected budget-friendly accommodation as I wanted to visit more places. So I didn’t spend much money on accommodation costs.

Dining in Big Sky

There you will find lots of dining options in Big Sky. But I would prefer to select from Lotus Pad, Olive B’s Big Sky Bistro, Horn & Cantle, and Everett’s 8800.

Olive B’s Big Sky Bistro

This is an awesome place for European and American cuisine with a cozy atmosphere. If you want to taste American and European cuisine, you must taste their food.

Horn & Cantle

Horn & Cantle is located at Lone Mountain Ranch, This restaurant offers a refined menu featuring local ingredients.

Everett’s 8800

This restaurant is located at the top of the Andesite Mountain. Everett’s offers amazing dining with beautiful views of nature.
